History

CPI was founded in 1972 by Alan Furst, LCSW and his father, William Furst, MD. Early in his private practice Furst began pioneering alternative treatments from psychiatric hospitalization for persons with serious and persistent mental illness. The combination of his compassion for patients and his decades in psychiatric private practice, led him to partner with his son Alan to establish the agency.

Their leadership has supported CPI’s growth from a small psychiatric clinic in the early 1970’s to a multi-modal comprehensive behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment organization. Today the agency is a long-time member of New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies, is highly respected and is proudly part of the continuum of treatment services in Essex County.
